Joy Torres

As a licensed clinical counselor, I am dedicated to serving individuals, groups, and organizations applying clinical counseling principles, methods, and procedures for the purpose of successful social, personal, career, and emotional development. My goal is to promote and enhance healthy self-actualizing and satisfying lifestyles. I agree to respect the right of those individuals seeking support by making realistic efforts to ensure that my services are used appropriately. My main focus for the past 4 years was on individuals who had substance use issues. I have had several clients who have been substance-free successfully. However, I also have a background working with children and teenagers. My philosophy of counseling includes empowering individuals to make sound decisions in various situations. I believe I create an atmosphere that is both uplifting and genuine. My goal is to restructure the client’s automatic thoughts to improve reality which will also influence positive decisions, raise self-esteem and accept learning.

Joy is originally from Phoenix, AZ. She enlisted into the United States Navy directly after high school serving our country on active duty orders. After her time on full-time active duty status, Joy moved back to Arizona to receive her Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and taught in school after receiving her degree. Joy moved to Michigan and reenlisted into the United States Navy Reserves and was shortly thereafter deployed to Afghanistan. After her first overseas deployment, Joy enrolled at the University of Phoenix where she obtained her Master's of Science degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. Joy has worked with troubled teens and young adults in Detroit and has worked extensively at a substance abuse clinic serving clients with a variety of life’s challenges and substance abuse issues for the past several years. During her time working at the substance abuse clinic, Joy was deployed to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Joy has been serving our country for nearly 20 years, serving the counseling needs of her community for nearly a decade, and is actively serving within her church working with children in the nursery and as an usher.
